General Practice Residency at
Jesse Brown VA Medical Center

The Jesse Brown VA Medical Center is a
comprehensive health care system, drawing upon
the diversity and strength of its staff and
affiliates, to fulfill a fourfold mission:
Clinical Care, Education, Research, and Back-up
to the Military.
The Jesse Brown VA Medical Center was created in
1996 with the integration of the VA Lakeside
Medical Center and VA West Side Medical Center.
The Jesse Brown VA Medical Center provides care
to over 65,000 veterans who reside in the City
of Chicago and Cook County, Illinois, and in six
counties in northwestern Indiana.
Located on the near west side of Chicago, the
West Side Division is a 189 bed tertiary care
facility whose primary service area includes
Chicago and the surrounding suburban and
“collar” counties in northeast Illinois and
northwest Indiana – an area with an estimated
400,000 veterans. The West Side Division
treated 6250 inpatients in Fiscal Year 2001.
The West Side Division has approximately 1,050
employees.
The West Side Division has one of the most
active outpatient programs in VA with over 100
specialty clinics that accommodated almost
300,000 outpatient visits annually. Outpatient
programs include same day surgery, mental
hygiene, dentistry, oral and maxillofacial
surgery, day hospital, HIV, substance abuse,
tuberculosis screening, post-traumatic stress
disorder, diabetes prevention and management,
foot screening and a memory disorder clinic.
